Use advice for data set | Note on comparability: A comparison with other products is only meaningful with a comparable application in the building. In principle, a comparison or evaluation of EPD data is only possible if all data sets to be compared were created in accordance with EN 15804 and the product-specific performance characteristics are taken into account.
Technical purpose of product or process | The straw bales from FASBA e.V. are used as insulating infill in a timber construction.

General comment on data set | This data set was developed on behalf of the Fachverband Strohballenbau Deutschland e. V. (FASBA) in the course of creating an EPD. The straw bales are produced by Baustroh GmbH in Verden, mainly from wheat and rye straw without the use of additional materials. Around 1000 m³ of building straw was produced in 2013. The bulk density of the products is between 85 and 115 kg/m³.

Time representativeness description | The straw types in the product, the transport distance to the construction site and the lorry load were provided by the straw bale construction association and refer to the year 2022.
Technological representativeness
Technology description including background system | Production process: The production of straw bales includes all agricultural processes from soil cultivation and sowing the grain to cultivating the plants and harvesting the grain. After harvesting, the straw is pressed into bales in the field without the use of additional materials and tied with polypropylene twine. The bulk density of the products is between 85 and 115 kg/m³. Building straw is available in bale form in the dimensions H x W x L 200-700 mm x 300 to 900 mm x 500 to 3000 mm. The bales are bound with polypropylene cords. Thermal conductivity λ 10,tr= 0.044 W/(mK) Rated value of thermal conductivity transverse to the direction of the stalk λ=0.052 W/(mK)
