Name
Seamless steel tubes of voestalpine Tubulars GmbH & Co KG
Use advice for data set Scope: This EPD is based on a declared unit of 1 metric ton of average voestalpine seamless steel tubes produced at the production site in Kindberg (Austria). System boundary: The life cycle assessment of average seamless steel tube refers to a cradle-to-gate analysis with modules (A1-A3 + C +D). Subsequent life cycle phases are part of the analysis Module A1-A3 | Production stage The production stage includes the burdens of the production of seamless steel tubes of voestalpine Tubulars GmbH & Co KG at the production site in Kindberg. Most of the used steel ingots are provided by the integrated steel mill at the production site in Donawitz. Thus, the upstream environmental impact of the steel supplied is represented by primary data of the respective production site. 2019 Electricity at Kindberg is provided from 100 % renewable energy from hydropower (emissions factor GWP-total: 6 g CO2-equivalents/kWh). Thermal energy provision is based on natural gas. Module A1-A3 also includes the production of the packaging of seamless steel tubes. Module C1 | Deconstruction and demolition Homogeneous dismantling is assumed as an end-of-life scenario. Associated efforts are negligible, no environmental impacts from the deconstruction of the products are declared. The specific energy demand til dismantling depends on the application of the seamless steel tubes. Module C2 | Transport The transport to the disposal of the material is estimated declaring a 50 km radius to the waste processing. Module C3 | Waste processing Product flows that reach Module D for recycling leave the product system in C3. Environmental impacts resulting from the grinding and sorting of steel scrap are not included due to the negligible expected environmental impact. Module C4 | Landfilling Module C4 declares the environmental impacts incurred by landfilling (5 % of the product). Module D | Credits and loads beyond the system boundary The potential for substituting primary steel with a recycling scenario (95 % of the product) is outlined in Module D.
Technical purpose of product or process Products of voestalpine Tubulars GmbH & Co KG are mainly used in the following areas: Oil and gas o Oil country tubular goods OCTG (Tubing, Casing, Coupling, Accessories) o Line Pipe, Oil & Gas Mechanical (standard, high-pressure applications) o Green Pipe for Drill Pipe Industrial pipes o Tubes for mobility (axles for trailers and commercial vehicles, pulleys, damping elements, vibration dampers, drivelines) o Mechanical pipes (tunnel anchors, ground anchors, slope attachments, crane construction pipes) o Boiler tubes, pressure tubes, high-temperature resistant tubes for refineries, power plants, chemical and petrochemical industry o Pipes for drawing mills for the automotive industry, pressure components for gas cylinders, mechanical engineering, heat exchanger tubes o ToughTubes (thermo-mechanically treated seamless steel tubes)

Technology description including background system The starting material for the manufacture of steel tube products by voestalpine Tubulars GmbH & Co KG is alloyed carbon steel, which is largely produced via the primary route (blast furnace, LD steel mill, ladle furnace) at the Donawitz site. The liquid alloyed carbon steel is casted into blooms using the continuous casting process. A small proportion of starting material is sourced from alternative suppliers who produce the steel using electric arc furnaces and then process it into round blooms. The blooms are delivered by rail and temporarily stored in the stockyard. The starting material consists exclusively of round blooms, which are primarily cut to the desired insert block lengths by means of carbide saws, with cutting taking place at room temperature. In contrast, blooms which in exceptional cases are cut to length by a billet shear must first be heated-up to a shear temperature of approx. 200 °C in a preheating furnace. After heating to forming temperature (approx. 1,280°C) in a rotary hearth furnace, the billets are rolled into a hollow in a piercing mill. After this aggregate, the hollows reach the push bench. There, the hollow is rolled over a mandrel bar to form a so-called mother pipe with a correspondingly thin wall and a length of max. 22 m. The mother pipes are reheated in a reheating furnace to approx. 1,000 °C and rolled in a stretch-reducing mill to the desired finished tube dimensions. Via a cooling bed and cold saws, the tubes reach an intermediate storage facility from where they are handed over either to the finishing line for industrial pipes or to the OCTG finishing line. Finishing Line for Industrial Pipes The entire group of Industrial Pipes (Mechanical Pipes, Line Pipe, etc.) pass through this finishing line and are transferred to a shipping warehouse after completion. OCTG Finishing Line The production flow in the OCTG mill is essentially divided into the following processing stages: Incoming inspection Upsetting Heat treatment Non-destructive testing Pipe threading shop Coupling shop Technical data: This EPD applies to all products of voestalpine Tubulars GmbH & Co KG in different steel grades, dimensions, designs and delivery conditions. Declared unit: This environmental product declaration refers to a declared unit of 1 ton of average seamless steel tube.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
